Participants of the Future China Advanced Leaders Programme (FC-ALP) 2016 celebrated the completion of the programme today with a Commencement Ceremony held at Regent Hotel. The Ceremony was graced by Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information and Ministry of Health, Business China Board Director, Mr Chee Hong Tat, who conferred graduation certificates to the 23 participants. Some 80 invited guests including Business China Chairman, Mr Lee Yi Shyan, witnessed the momentous occasion.
Trained 113 top management level participants over past 5 years
Since its inception in 2012, the FC-ALP has equipped 113 top executives and successful business owners with invaluable insights and first-hand experience of the latest developments in China, thereby preparing them to be “China-ready” and “China-savvy”. Through this programme, participants are able to meet and interact with like-minded peers, with the aim of building an extensive network for future collaborative opportunities in China and beyond. The 23 FC-ALP graduates this year hailed from diverse industry sectors, including real estate & property management, aviation, logistics, construction, education, technology, finance, healthcare and agribusiness. The diversity has enabled them to widen their scope and approach towards building a more holistic construct of the business environment in China. The graduating class this year will also be invited to join the FC-ALP Alumni Club, and further tap into the closely knit community to help them advance in China.
Building network and exploring untapped opportunities
For three weeks across the past three months, the course had provided an immersive environment for participants to learn from esteemed academics, veteran industry practitioners and thought leaders. The delegation also had exclusive networking sessions with local and Chinese senior government officials and key business leaders, enabling them to further develop their internationalisation network and capability.
As part of the second course segment held in end August, participants visited Shenzhen and Chongqing in China. The delegation was led by Dr Koh Poh Koon, Minister of State for Trade & Industry and National Development, who is also Business China Board Director. During the week-long stint in China, participants visited renowned technology companies based in Shenzhen, such as Huawei, ZTE Corporation, electric car pioneer BYD, and an innovative start-up Kuang-Chi; as well as visited CapitaLand’s project in Chongqing, and called on Mr Han Baochang, Director General of the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity Administrative Bureau (CCIAB), thereby establishing connections for future collaboration.
On 31 August, the FC-ALP delegation also attended the “Pioneering Innovation & Collaboration: One Belt One Road – China Singapore” business forum jointly organised by Business China, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Chongqing Foreign Trade & Economic Relations Commission (CQFTERC), as well as CCIAB. Together with some 350 participants, the FC-ALP participants exchanged views on growth sectors in both countries and explored untapped areas of collaboration.
Class representative, Mr Tang Tuck Weng, Senior Director for Ministry of National Development Eco-City Project Office and the National Climate Change Secretariat in Prime Minister's Office, shared his thoughts on how the course had helped him to gain practical knowledge about China. He remarked that, “FC-ALP is particularly helpful in building up my understanding of China from different aspects such as understanding the prevailing business culture, navigating the political system, and appreciating how very different cities can be. It is also a good platform for the public services and the business community to get to know each other, to forge trust and partnership for possible future collaborations.”
Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Chairman of Business China said: “China is constantly changing and evolving. We have to remain plugged in to developments in China in order to know latest developments. It is a relentless process and Business China can certainly be a useful partner. I hope to see all of you, your associates and partners in Business China’s future activities.”
Prof Neo Boon Siong, Dean of Nanyang Business School shared, “NTU’s Nanyang Business School is privileged to partner Business China in delivering this one-of-a-kind FC-ALP programme. The curriculum is updated each year, to reflect the changes that China is undergoing - socially, politically and economically. We are committed to bring the best to the participants. We strongly advocate lifelong learning, and we encourage participants to continue updating their skills to remain globally relevant and competitive.”
Guest-of-Honour, Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information and Ministry of Health, Mr Chee Hong Tat shared that, “Training programmes like the FC-ALP and other initiatives by Business China help prepare more Singaporeans to be China-ready, and expose them to new business opportunities in different parts of China. These are part of the Government’s efforts to help our people acquire international exposure and working experience, and support our companies when they expand overseas to China and other markets.”
Into its fifth edition this year, the FC-ALP is jointly organised by Business China and NTU’s Nanyang Business School, and supported by strategic partner International Enterprise (IE) Singapore. It is the only senior executive management course in Asia to comprehensively address the complex dynamics between social, political, economic and cultural factors that are fuelling China’s rapid rise.
